Zoe Saldana As Nina Simone Outrages The Internet (Again)

via COURTESY PHOTO

The back and forth over whether Zoe Saldana is the right actress to portray the iconic musician/actress/civil rights activist Nina Simone has blown up again, this time following the release of a trailer and poster for Cynthia Mort's unauthorized film, "Nina".

The issue? In the film, Saldana, a light-skinned Afro-Latina actress, wears blackface and a prosthetic nose so she can appear closer to Simone's likeness. This sucks because failure to lock in a naturally dark skinned black woman, with a naturally wide nose, underscores Hollywood's erasure of dark skinned WOC in favor of light skin WOC for every role other than a house keeper or slave.

Nina Simone's daughter spoke out against the film and its casting telling the NYT, that her mother was often told she was "too black" and her nose was "too wide". So it's pretty fucked up that a dark-skinned, wide-nosed woman who felt discriminated against because of her identity will be played by a light-skinned, slender-nosed, Dominican actress. In other whitewashing diversity news, Simone's assistant turned manager, Clifton Henderson (David Oyelowo), is apparently her lover in the film, when in real life he was gay. #Hollywood

I say we move on and enjoy the "What Happened, Miss Simone" documentary starring the actual Queen Simone. (via: EW)

via Twitter

In a move that shouldn't really surprise you, the coolest POTUS and FLOTUS tag team are headed to SXSW, where they'll each give keynote addresses. This magical moment marks the first appearance at the festival by a sitting president.

President Obama will deliver his keynote during the "interactive" segment of the festival, and take part in a conversation on "civic engagement in the 21st century" with Evan Smith, the CEO and editor in chief of The Texas Tribune. MObama will appear the following week on March 16, during the "Music" portion, where she'll discuss the "Let Girls Learn" initiative. Both talks are open to festivalgoers with an Interactive and Music badge.
