Senate Committee Approves DeVos' Nomination

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) on Tuesday morning approved Betsy DeVos’s nomination to lead the Department of Education. She was confirmed 12-11 along party lines, and now her nomination will go to the Senate floor, where she'll need one majority to be confirmed. Two Republicans, Sens Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine) have not made their decision yet on how they'll vote on the floor. A Senate panel voted along party lines Tuesday to advance President Trump’s pick for education secretary, Betsy DeVos, sending her nomination to the full Senate for final approval amid the first signs of fissures within the GOP majority over her fitness for the job.

Democrats are seeking to block Devos's confirmation over her long support of vouchers for private, religious schools and conflict of interests. (via: NYT)
